Has a VEX robot ever exploded?

Has anyone seen a robot/drone/etc. explode/have something major fall of?

Yes, major parts, fires, etc. all due to human error.

Our whole intake fell off at a tournament once…

I had a hole puncher and arm fall of one match(Forgot to tighten the shaft collars) needless to say we got destroyed that match 51-101

I did VEX IQ Pitching In, and at Worlds in one match, after we lined up to shoot into the goal against the side with the hanging bars, my teammate accidentally pressed the button that extended our high hang mechanism instead of the button that fired the catapult. The lift started to extend against the low hanging bar, which was preventing it from extending all the way up as it was programmed to.

With everything being plastic and there being two motors on the lift, the entire mechanism broke. My teammate described it as “exploding,” although it wasn’t that intense.

I’ve seen robots completely deconstruct and parts fall off countless times, I’ve seen videos of fires (both intentional and non-intentional) but never an explosion.

I mean, my organization is getting a lot of sixth graders next year…

I’ve seen the old cortex system catch fire. One of my friends on another team set multiple of the old potentiometers on fire.
I’ve seen the new motors smoke, not necessarily catch fire, but just a little bit of smoke.
Back in “In the Zone” my sister team built a double reverse four bar that all came apart when he lifted it up very quickly, and it just all exploded across the workshop. The left and right sides of the robot came apart and the entire robot ended up sprawled out about 10 feet across the room.

What do you mean by intentional?

at Worlds 2014 - misrouted battery cable through lift mechanism caused it be sheared … short result meltdown of battery - brief view of damaged battery had burn flare patterns… not sure all out combustion.

Mechanical failures plenty examples …

oh. I see now. Carry on.

I’m always reminded of FTC when someone asks this question.

If you fill a pneumatic tank way over the limit, explosions might happen. However, it would then happen immediately, not during the match.

Some teams (like our team’s first year) didn’t use locking nuts (), and minor parts of the robot fell off during some of our competitions.

Those motor controllers on the old cortex system were a literal ticking time bomb. You never know when one of them will catch fire, and any little nack in the wire would often create magical smoke. Fun times.

In our first year of robotics, my team had 3 out of our 4 wheels fall off during a single match. It was at our first competition.

I had our omni wheels on the outside of our drive train with nothing but the gears holding them on. During every match, all 4 of our wheels almost fell off and I didn’t have space to properly mounted.

Sounds like a skill issue…

But from my experience, I’ve never had a robot explode, but since this being my first year, I did have a few “errors” happen.
(Aka not tightening the catapult mount properly, double tying 12 rubber bands to it, firing it and watching the robot have a “rapid unscheduled disassembly”. Luckily I was the only person there and the cata structure didn’t travel far while being mostly intact)
