If you could change ONE thing about VEX

This thread is for users to share what they would change about VEX. PLEASE do not judge other peoples posts. Also please try and share something other than water game since that is pretty much universal.

What does VEX mean?

Are you talking about VEXRobotics, the company that makes the robot parts?

Or are you talking about the competitions that use VEX parts?

Or are you talking about the RECF that sponsors some robotics competitions that use VEX parts, but also runs a number of other competitions?

Shipping charges! Small, lightweight stuff could be shipped USPS 1st class or priority mail for a fraction of the FedEx Ground minimum charge.

I would overhaul the entire V5 system. (Sorry I know you asked for one thing so I hope the V5 system counts as “One Thing”)

  1. Remove the touch screen to allow the system to be smaller overall, or rather have a smaller touch screen (like possibly 2x3" instead)
  2. Fix the ESD issue permanently
  3. Make Purdue’s ESDs legal
  4. 99.5%, motor lock-ups, ports breaking, and white-screens fixed
  5. The “smart motor” is a failure. I believe the amount gained from the capabilities of a smart motor is outweighed by the high prices and redundant IME’s baked into every single motor. It would be better to dumb the motor back down to make the motor more cost-effective.
  6. I would honestly change the wires to be something that gives an appearance of “I’m an engineer” and not “this is metal Lego mindstorms.” The “snap-in” phone wires are not that reliable and any small wiggle could mean the difference between a win and a loss in a competition. It would be really cool to consider wires that are metal at the ends and you need to twist them in order for them to lock. So even if something wiggles, nothing’s gonna move. Plus, these wires would have a “We know what we’re doing” appearance that can keep things simple but professional.

Electronics issues, heavy-duty shaft collars that keep breaking themselves, shaft collars in general,
My main issues aren’t vex issues, they are ME issues

I can agree with your points 1-5, but point 6 might be more a matter of neatness…there’s a whole lot of modular cabling out there that can have either amateur or professional appearance:

  1. Rework the vision sensor. I get that some teams have been successful with it, but in my opinion it is a costly black box that is sitting in our cabinet, that none of our competition teams have ever had reasonable success with.
  2. Add a V5 speaker.

better match vods (some comps STILL don’t have them, they’re uploaded privately and sometimes the quality is bad)

I think that this could be aided if the RECF provided resources, tutorials to stream as well as best practices for hardware and software.

  1. Bo3
  2. V5 speaker
  3. Alliance selection system
  4. Fix the random qualification matches (make it so you can’t be allied with the same team twice and you can’t go up against the same team more than 1-3 times, depending on the event size)

If I could change ONE thing about VEX, I would reinstate FVC, which would also replace FLL with VIQC.
