I have seen many topics on this, but I haven’t seen a clear answer. I want to either learn C++ or Python over the summer and become my teams coder, but I don’t know where to start. I know block coding, so i’m not completely new, but I am wondering if I should learn Python or C++, where to learn it, and what platform I should code on (Vexcode or Visual Studio). I also want to learn CAD and don’t know what platform to use or where to learn CAD. If anyone can help, thank you so much.
Here are some of my posts that can answer this question ![]()
I would suggest using the search bar as well. ![]()
I use Onshape, and through just a few tutorials I was able to understand the basics. I think it’s a great platform for starting, but is still viable when you become more experienced with CAD. Additionally, it will help you if you ever use Onshape for a school project, or even in a future job.
these are the tutorials that helped me.
I think that it is great that you are wanting to learn actual code! While some of the coding logic skills no doubt transfer from block code to real world, in general, block coding just isn’t as transferable as text coding.
Anywho, I digress. If I were you, I would learn Python. That is language that I started with several years ago for a reason. The syntax is simple, the language is robust, and it is pretty widely used.
To start with, you can look over the docs on be code’s built in Python functionality.
I recently reviewed the Palardy tutorials, as I wanted to refer it to my students. I noticed some of the files in the video were no longer available in the public search. Since I had also looked at the video a few years ago, I still had the missing files. I reposted them as public files.
TLDR, search onshape public for “JP tutorial” to get access to the files used in the videos.
