Motor Controller 55 + BEST large motor + V5 brain specs

What is inside the Motor Controller 55? Is it just a “dumb” wire connector? Or is there other circuitry in there? I don’t see much in the way of specifications or documentation on the product page.

And if I’m using two of them to drive two BEST Large Motors with a standard V5 brain, what are the limits for how much continuous power one could expect to get out of them? (And is it documented anywhere?)

It’s smart, there’s a microcontroller, motor driver and other parts.
The board is based on the one inside the VEX 5.5W motor.

The brain will not be the limit, the MC55 will limit max motor current to ~2.5A.

Thank you for your response!

BEST published this document that recommends using the beta firmware (v1.1.6b2) for the BEST robotics season: https://dash.bestrobotics.org/download.php?id=4919&folder=1509

Do you know any specifics about the MC55 improvements in that firmware version?

1.1.6b2 contained a firmware update for the MC55 that adjusts current limiting when motor driver temperature is high. In the 5.5W motor we have a temperature sensor on the actual motor can, that is not available when using a BEST motor, the firmware needs to compensate for that.
