Ok, let me preface this by saying im not very articulate, and the best information is here.
With that out of the way, now we can get down to buisness. What is net nutrality? Well, net neutrality is simply put, the paid prioritization of certain websites, buisness, or programs that use the internet. Now, is when you ask why is this a bad thing? Well, if the fcc manages to pass the new rule set they have proposed, well it'll be about 200x worse than anything the GDC has ever put out. With the new rulings this would allow the people who already over charge and under provide you with internet, to make *that* even worse.
With the new rules they plan to vote on, this would allow them to deny you service to websites, not dis-similar to how they make you pay for cable tv packages. These new rules also allow them to throttle and slow any connections they deem fit, this means that services that use large bandwidths are going to be double dipped, by charging you for access, and then charging the website for bandwidth (which they already pay for).
With cable companies being as bad as they are already, you should have no doubt in your mind that they'll take full advantage of deregualtion. Any and all obscure websites that catre to a specific audience or mindset would shut down as they lost trafiic due to people not buying the "correct" package. Think of what they do to tv, then apply it to the internet.
So, why am i posting this here? Well, it all comes down to this. The more aware and active your are, the more that congress will hear, the more likely they are to vote nay on the issue. This would stop them from charging you access to websites, and stricter control would be enforced pro-nn. This post was about raising awareness, and the more people who understand what NN means, the more people are pro NN. Please, talk to your family freinds, social media networks, raise as much awareness as you can. Its the only thing we have to prevent this nightmare that is cable companies buying out congressmen. Its good to hear young people paying attention to policies that effect them.
It has everything to do with robotics. Most of my robotics education has been administered on the internet, and net neutrality could adversely effect it
I just think before asking people to take action a better approach would be more to explain the issue and how it relates to robotics. Those on the other side of the issue might be turned off by you simply presenting one side of the argument in a place that is not directly related to the issue. Allow the forum to become a place of open discussion for the both sides of the topic. I do side with @9065_parker on this issue, however I believe both sides deserve a fair hearing and I’m not sure this is the best way to present the topic.
I agree, the other side is saying “I’d love to pay more for a specific set of websites pre-determined by isps. And i love that the fact that isps are capable of regualting litterally everything you see”
Like I said. I believe we should have more regulations on our internet providers, I side with you on this issue. I would not provide a very good argument for the those who support deregulation. However, it is clear from the direction this thread has gone so far is that some of these posts have made forum users uncomfortable. I think presenting people to one side of an issue and asking them to immediately take action and support it is a bad way to spread information, even if I agree with it. Especially in today’s political landscape where people surround themselves in a social media echo-chamber, I think it is important that people take more time exploring issues and deciding for themselves.
Personally, this post was just meant as a way to raise awareness for the issue, as is seems most people are unaware of whats going on, ill edit my post to better reflect that
I’m really happy to see this thread. And the reason i’m happy is independent of my opinion on this topic. You kids on here are the future of STEM. You need to care and be informed of STEM related policies that can impact everyone. You need to stay informed on how the technologies you are going to invent can be used in both positive and negative ways.
Before choosing a phone plan, you examine the available service providers. Ultimately, you choose “RoboPhone”, because they don’t count streaming of music from the music service “RobotHeads” (which happens to be your favorite) against your monthly data limit. This will save you a considerable amount of data usage per month, so it’s a good deal for you.

Wow, that’s pretty bad. This idea will make those providers reeealy lose people. To be honest this idea for the providers to do won’t benefit anyone but rather make things worse. Glad I’m with XFinity One thing is that once you pay, you get what you pay for. If you pay for one thing and they give you internet that’s restricted, then you probably by default get less than what you asked for. Using the internet freely is part of your freedom, and the government stepping in and limiting the sites you see isn’t what follows your amendments.
The problem is, lots of people only have one option, or only one viable option anyway. For us, it’s Cox Communications. There’s really no other option. So these companies can get away with anything, especially as they keep merging…
