@jpearman I’ve noticed this on both kinds of V5 motor now, and I have to ask, what on earth is the point of those fake cooling vents? Why not put like… actual cooling vents there?
Also am I correct in saying that there are no cartridges for these? Are they similar in power and speed to a 393?
The new V5 Smart Motor (5.5 W) motor is essentially a 393 Motor + IQ Smart Motor:
The new V5 Smart Motor (5.5 W) contains the motor from the 393 Motor, the same gearing and integrated encoder from an IQ Smart Motor, a new full metal gearbox output carrier (with a fourth planet instead of the three inside the IQ Smart Motor), and a new temperature sensor that will be adhered directly onto the motor itself (which is how we can get more usable mechanical power out of this motor compared to the prior 393 Motor).
There are no swappable cartridges or gear ratios; the motor will always have a free speed of 200 RPM and fixed overall ratio of 64:1.
The “cooling vents” were mostly added to the V5 Smart Motor (5.5 W) because their bigger (11 W) sibling already had them, and thus it formed a consistent visual design language between the two motors. We do not want any actual openings in the motor housing, because then metal dust from cut / filed pieces of metal has an easy ingress route.
We also changed the aluminum mounting standoffs to steel.
I wonder how strong the magnetic field of the electromagnet actually is. From something that small, I don’t see it having many uses in high load applications (that is without any actual data to back up –– just don’t get your hopes too high).
They will have to put a limit in place for next season. If you don’t use sensors, you could have 12 electro magnets on the bot. You could potentially use that to pull down on the end of a lift and raise it.
I can’t provide any exact numbers, but you are right to keep in mind that that these are not the electromagnets that you see on cranes in junkyard scenes from the movies.
They have been specifically designed to work with the Weighted Discs included with the Workcell kit.
