Notebook tips?

Any tips on the notebook? We started with a pretty bad notebook, and we’re rewriting/adding design processes etc to the notebook. Is there anything specific we could add?

You should add charts and graphs. Also, add pictures. No one wants to read five paragraphs of writing. If you like doing extra things, color code the notebook. It helps add some color, so it won’t be so boring.

Try the search bar, there are plenty of other threads with the same issue:

add photos of what you are doing, you can also make drama in it, something not so boring to read. I complain about the rules in mine all the time

remember to keep the notebook a record of what actually happened, as it is not a story but instead documentation of how y’all came to the design that y’all have. maybe do not add information that did not actually happen. judges are not judging your notebook as a story and do not care if your notebook is boring (it probably will be as notebooks aren’t very interesting to read :slightly_smiling_face:), they are solely looking at the important information. Also, the drama would probably be considered extraneous information anyways.

I must say this is one of the most fascinating pieces of advice I’ve heard regarding notebooks.

Are you actually joking? Because if you are I don’t want to be that guy but…

Please, don’t “make drama in it”. It’s not a novel.

Several articles on the Engineering Notebook from the Purdue SIGBots Wiki: The Engineering Notebook | Purdue SIGBots Wiki

You can also find some very strong notebooks linked in an article under that section.

A few general tips:

  • Rubric is key
  • Page-count is not an indicator of quality. Don’t feel the need to crank out a massive number of pages if smaller, high-quality pages can do just as well if not better.
  • Don’t neglect the interview (rubric breakdown on SIGBots Wiki as well). A bad interview can make the best notebook fall short in award discussions.

no real drama, I personally think judges wont like that too much

no

yeah but you shouldnt even be expressing your opinions in your notebook, just include the things that matter

I understand that, but my team, we all agree on what gets put in the notebook, if it is unliked it gets taken out. My opinion its how you and your team feels about what’s getting put in the notebook.

Would not recommend this. Better to have pure facts in the notebook, and fabricating drama is not the best way to spice up the notebook. (Go in-depth instead)

I’m sorry that what I said is becoming a problem

this is what I mean by drama

I wouldn’t necessarily call this “drama”. To me, this feels like a normal notebook entry. If your definition of drama is this, then I would keep doing this drama. If it is in any way more than this, I would stop that.
Thanks for that clarification though!

I probably should of clarified that sooner, sorry :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
