And a lot of school teams ONLY get access to their robot during the club meeting. For some that may be only once a week. They don’t get to access whenever they want.
Corona (Covid-19) does not care about the game - or anything at all.
The real question is it fair to release the game early while many are trying to take care of themselves, families, friends, and community?
Lets use the time to support our family, friends and communities right now…
As I tell my robotics kids when they get too into themselves, ask “Can I help?”
I would recommend new game NOT be released until state of emergencies are lifted.
Robotics can wait.
Yes, I definitely agree.
By the fact that most of us are out of school, I think it is not unreasonable to release the new game early but it may bring people together causing the virus to spread even more than it already has. Of course, I am personally very bored right now as robotics seems like my life during the season and would love to continue working on stuff like CAD’ing prototypes, but I think building prototypes and possibly building robots can give an unfair advantage to homeschooled teams as the public and private schools would not let teams get together.
The homeschool/independent teams may need some sort of advantage as they meet less than school teams. Overall, it seems like releasing the game in the close future (next week or so) will bring about various problems; however, I’d most certainly want to see it released. The problems it could cause do not seem that substantial, but they could be.
Here you go, watch this: Best Small Project Motor – Cool Tools
About $2.50 each, plus some shipping.
Going to guess a huge chunk of us have craft stuff because of school projects, including a hot glue gun. My local maker has done meets where we use carboard, cups and a motor to make squiggle bots.
Don’t let lack of real robot parts stifle your creativity!
For us at least in the LA area we get a lot of private and home schooled teams that get a major advantage as it is only one to two people per team making it so that they can work on the robot almost 24/7
Does this need to be locked because it has something to do with the game release. I know this has been brought up a lot.
Thanks!
Discussions probably can go on - good pressure relief.
Better relief of energy is to go out an help at home - chores, or community - walk and pick up trash… make the world a better place.
While the new game should not be released early, it should also not be released later than usual. I can’t have two breaks with nothing to do. Many clubs plan well in advance for meetings and activities after the game unveil, and regardless of emergency state(s), the game should be released to at the very least allow for brainstorming by students.
The only reason that I could realistically see delaying the release is if corona gets worse and everyone everywhere goes into a total quarantine (i.e. zero contact with anyone else) thing as releasing a game for a bunch of teenagers in the middle of a serious pandemic probably wouldn’t make RECF/Vex look that great
I think the new game should be released soon as possible. It will help us release Tower Takeover… And move on.
Actually there are/were many great teams that are not affiliated to any schools. It is not true that school teams will have an advantage over privately run teams.
Heck in many ways I think the converse is true. Privately run teams tend to have more advantages than school run teams.
There are so many threads about this. @DRow
Considering that a lot of us are going to be trapped inside soon (if not already), I think that is genuinely the perfect time for design to start.
Oh I am 100% agreeing on that, there are just multiple other threads on something very similar to this
Not necessarily. There are quite a few downfalls to being a private team.
Not trying to be mean or anything, just trying to make the forum less of a headache
IMO this is just friendly discussion. If it elevates to something greater than that then this can close.
