What I like to do is drift a lot. To do this you need to slide the stick to the wall then then when at max speed slide the stick on the wall from the forward position to the side position. This will let you slide in and steal goals for a advantage.
It’s also better to overshoot instead of undershoot
How would you do this on tank drive/tank controls? I want to try it out during practice today but I’m not sure how to do it with the tank controls.
When at max speed move left or right stick toward instead of both
Thank you! That’s sort of what I thought it would be, but I wasn’t quite sure.
You can also slightly move the other stick to make a bigger turn
No problem! If you need anything else let me know
Scrims also show you failure modes for your robot. Real practice, with reflection and coaching, is the most valuable.
if your asking this question it is a great time to get used to a new system
first off use tank its just better and you can use the side joystick motions for macros and such if you want
second print a scuff controller if you can or buy one from someone who can and if you cant or don’t want to hold your controller up side down this is normally horrible when doing it for video games but for vex it is amazing because you can configure your joysticks to not be inverted relative to an up side down controller both have a learning curve but will be worth it because you can press many more boutons and move more motors/pneumatics while you are still driving
I disagree with this. Arcade control is a lot simpler and is more intuitive to use. It’s much easier to control the robot with, and you still have two axes left over for other functions. But it ultimately just the driver’s preference.
everyone forgets this but tank also leaves 2 axes open
also better isn’t always easier
I mean I don’t hate arcade its defiantly usable my partner for every tournament uses it
but u just have a little less control and a little worse turning
Yes, I was aware that tank also had two open axes, I was just trying to say that arcade also had that feature.
How do you have less control with arcade? It is a lot easier to go perfectly straight with and you can also turn right on the spot as well as turn while moving. And you can also do all these things with tank, but IMO it’s just easier on arcade.
I 100% agree that arcade is easier I just believe its slightly suboptimal
Find out what your robot can do, find out how to execute that, become one with your robot, and just DRIVE
what my team does is map out a specific route and finds how reliable it is
I’d argue that that’s down to personal preference. for me, arcade leaves an up-down joystick axis so I can have my lift arm bound to the right stick.
I suppose so but I also gave ways to free up other buttons
for me I use axis 1 and 4 to do macros
Get better at driving, period. Learn to drive SLOW and precise. Speed will come later. Learn to drive in reverse. Learn to drive nose-in (facing you). Learn to drive nose-in, in reverse.
The drivers that can fly a quadcopter/heli typically are better robot drivers.
Nope.
While I personally love tank drive, arcade can easily be just as intuitive, it’s all dependent on how the driver is, there is no one size fits all.
Definitely not.
While having more buttons and therefore more functions is great, it also requires the ability to multitask, so it’s worth honing your reflexes and whatnot to be able to properly utilize all the extra buttons either scuffs or a different controller grip would provide.
(Hey, while you’re here, check this thread out)
One thing you’ll find very quickly is that 99 out of 100 times, your route in a tournament is going to go very wrong, very quickly. One of the best things a driver can be able to do is react and adapt to whatever is happening on the field. Maybe practice some skills while still grasping a feel for your robot, but reach out to other teams in order to do some scrimmages, hone those reactionary skills, not only will they help in VEX, you can take them with you wherever you go.
For whatever it’s worth, our team does 2-person driving. My teammate does the wheels (tank drive) and I do the rest of the functions.
It seems to me that this gives us a better ability to concentrate on our own tasks. If you have good communication, 2 drivers could be something to check out…
