VEX cube FUN!

You know, I said that the images weren’t mine a long time ago, and you kept liking them, so it’s pretty much on you at this point.

Hey now guys dont turn this thread into a battleground, DRow s gonna shut it down and we cant have anymore vex cube fun :frowning:

Hey @codec, beat this:

WOW!

How is it even possible?

How long did that take??

My mentor is going to be questioning why I’m staying at robotics until 8pm at the end of the year…

I gotta try this

I believe that if anyone can consistently stack cubes in this manner within any match then they should automatically win

@xenon27, balancing on the edges is easy  because for each additional cube you could adjust its position in two axis x and y, as well as its heading by turning it.

Balancing one cube on its corner is harder, because you could only adjust its heading by turning it.

Double stacking cubes corner-on-corner is very hard, because you can only slightly turn them before you start losing the area of corner intersection (and its min width) over which you need to position center of mass of the top cube:

The balancing attempts themselves took only 30-40 min, probably, only 20% of the total time. Most of the time went into thinking about the strategy and doing some preparations.

List of the tricks is hidden behind the spoilers thing, but before you look at them, I would encourage you to, first, try to corner balance cubes for a couple of minutes, think what makes the problem hard and what could be done to make it easier.

Spoilers

Even though the cubes are almost identical, the double corner balancing task is so demanding, that even the differences within the manufacturing tolerances matter.

First, I went through the 36 cubes in a box, sorting them all by how easy it was to make them stand on of their corners. That would require cubes to have perfect corner surface, angle, and weight distribution. Less than half could even be balanced and only three allowed to do it well on the two opposite corners.

Second step was to do similar tests to find the best cubes for balancing on the edge and a couple with the perfectly parallel sides for the bottom part of the structure.

Another trick was to put entire structure on a box with a slightly concave surface. This allowed to adjust surface angle of the base cube with a very fine precision by slightly moving it around.

The final trick was to build some sort of scaffolding that would hold bottom cubes in place as you balance them and move up to the next level. Once the top cube was balanced on its corner you could carefully remove the scaffolding one level at a time.

Edit: Sorry, for turning otherwise fun topic into a mini classroom lesson for a few minutes.

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming…

Impressive. Now stack three cubes on their corners.

Pool of 36 candidate cubes and manual selection might not be good enough for such task. You may need to map quality of each corner and cube balance with some sort of measuring equipment. Then use something else to aid precisely setting up the cubes (lasers?) …

I certainly, don’t have neither skill nor patience to do that. But if anyone else wants to try, please do, just don’t spend the rest of the summer on it. :slightly_smiling_face:

So the towers are watertight…

I’ve got it: pour water in your opponents alliance tower and the cube will float up and not count as scored.

Is it against the rules to have water in your robot? I don’t think the game manual says anything about it.

@IsANerd I think your onto something

New meta in the making? lol

Also, if you made a tank and managed to insert cubes into it, the cubes would float up and form a stack and it would act as a passive lock.

< R26 > Pneumatics are limited. Pneumatic devices may only be charged to a maximum of 100 psi.
Teams may only use a maximum of two (2) legal VEX pneumatic air reservoirs on a Robot.

@Codec Does it say anywhere that the “Reservoir” has to be air?

Water game for da win!!

I mean… is it legal?

What if you collect condensation throughout the match and pour it at the end?
