I’m going to try to make a x-drive but honestly i’m probably going to fail and then give up and make a tank drive.
Why are you doing mechanum? What advantages are you trying to get there?
A mecanum drive allows your robot to strafe by spinning the wheels in countered directions.
But why do you need to strafe when you don’t need to align against the wall for scoring like TT? What are you trying to accomplish by strafing in Change Up?
Strafing allows for greater maneuverability, better protection from defense, and more efficient autonomous/programming skills (it is much easier to correct an error by strafing than by realigning). Either way, there’s no downside to strafing, so why not utilize it?
I just don’t think strafing is really that helpful in this game. I think omnis would be a bigger advantage.
And what is the advantage of an all-omni over an X- or mecanum Drive?
Mecanum has less traction I’m pretty sure.
Nothing particular, just quick turns, simple design. I think x drive will interfere with some designs, but I could be wrong. I’m really not trying to be argumentative, I just see little gain from other drives.
What size are you planning on doing this year?
WIDTH:
- 35
- 31-34

- 26-29
- 25
- Less than 25
LEINGTH:

My mentor and teammates keep telling me that an x drive is the best way to go, but I just dont feel they are. I really dont see a need to have strafing besides it just being a nice addition, and a tank drive will have more torque and be just as good, if just a bit slower. This an offensive game, pushing matches are gonna be a thing, I dont want to be the one being pushed
So what do you think advantages to x drive or mechanum are this year? I’m really asking out of curiosity, I don’t have much experience with either. I don’t see much viability, but I could be missing something.
Well we had one during TT. Did you notice the robot using the strafing? As a driver I think it’s really convenient. It makes it easier to pick up and align my intake with objects easier, avoid defence and maneuver easier, and just all around makes driving easier and raises the skill ceiling for me as I was kinda limited with just tank.
Mecanum is also harder to push sideways than a standard omni tank drive
I’m not 2775Josh, but our driver really likes the maneuverability that strafing with mecanums allows. Also (as I have said elsewhere in this thread), mecanums resist defence better than a tank drive with omni wheels.
Note: I am aware that you can have traction wheels in the middle of a tank drive, but then you don’t get to strafe
Yeah, I noticed during TT. Mechanums are slower though, due to friction. I figure in a speed game, the slower mechanums will be a drag I think. X drive may be viable, but is sometimes tough to build robots around.
True, but aren’t mechs slower due to friction? I figure since they slow you down, it will hurt in this game which needs speed. Maybe X?
They’re definitely slower when strafing, but I haven’t noticed much of a difference with straight driving speed. I would imagine they probably are slightly slower than omnis, but I think the benefits outweigh the minor speed loss
To avoid being pushed, what about a six-wheel tank drive with traction wheels in the middle of two omni wheels?
The thing with mechs is that they take a lot of drive practice to use use to their full capability. I’ve seen drivers have a mech drive and just completely forget about it. Most of the value comes from skills. If a team isn’t planning on doing rly good in skills, a lot of value is lost. Also, the goals are circular why would u need to strafe
