I am a freshman and my team recently got invited to compete in the world championships. This is the first time any team from my school has been able to go, so none of us really have a clue what it will look like. I know it will last a few days, but will it be only qualification matches on day one? Does every team have 50 matches? Does it start at 8AM? I would just appreciate some general information so that me and my team aren’t going into it blind and not knowing what to expect or do.
Not even close. I’ve never seen a worlds where a team has played more than 11 matches.
every team will have 10 qualification matches and every team will be sorted into a division of about 80ish other teams. these divisons will be realeased a couple of weeks prior to worlds so do some pre scouting then. Worlds is usualy 90% practice/getting registered first day with 1 practice match and mabey 1 qualification match. day 2 is qualifications matches, day 3 is end of quals + div elims and awards and then Grand finals/dome were all the div champs face off. and you run skills and do interviews inebwtween matches. its alot of fun and you get to see temas from all around the globe and meet people who youve only talked to through discord and vex forums. Best of luck to your team
Here is the official agenda for VRC High School:
as @TimmyOsborne mentioned, you usually have 10 qualification matches. Very few on the first day, most on the second day, a couple + eliminations and grand finals the third day.
The teams are split in 10 divisions of roughly 80 teams each. Winning alliance from each division + a couple more are going to make it to the dome. It will be a lot of fun
I hope you have a great experience!
You can find the agenda here: VEX Robotics World Championship Detailed Agenda - REC Foundation. For V5RC High School, looks like we are getting one practice match, one qualification match, and opening ceremonies on day one just like last year. Expect most (a little more than half) of the qualification matches on day 2. Day 3 we will finish out our qual matches and then dome. The dome is the best part of the entire event.
this is only true regarding the qualifying matches.
most years will be 10 matches.
But for teams that made it to the elims, and then to the dome, then it will be a lot more matches.
every year… Whats Worlds Like?
it’s kind of like a convention, except you compete. Just try to have fun. It’s not all about winning (unless you’re doing really good, then go win I guess). Try to lock in your design and prep your robot in advance so you don’t have to work on it the whole time at comp.
Make sure you are following every rule before inspections, because they will nitpick and make you change stuff that doesn’t actually affect anything. They got me during spin-up for not having other vex parts behind my license plates cause they “blocked discs from going into the robot from the side” (license plates are technically cosmetic and cannot serve any function) which I didn’t even think of.
Also, I’d avoid duct tape, even if it’s in a legal use-case. They got mad at me for even suggesting that it was legal even though it was purely cosmetic, and therefore by the rules legal. Just don’t argue with them at inspection unless it’s something totally ridiculous. They’ll usually work with you and answer questions.
