Hey, I don’t want to be that guy. School closes in a few days and lots of us need to get POs in, or we wait for Sept. So I’m looking for the Hero release to see if there are parts I need to add to all 70 of our V1 kits. Like last year was big for ratchet and pawl kits.

Thanks

Foster,

I understand.

We are working diligently to get these released ASAP. The update I received today is that V5RC is a bit ahead of IQ, but both sets are on track to need just a bit more work done before we are comfortable with release. Main step creation seems to be complete, we are adding part call-outs, build tips, and additional supplementary views to steps that are more detailed.

As for parts that may be valuable to add to V1 kits to enable the Hero Build, you’ll likely want to look at the following:

  • 228-7887 Linear Motion Pack (Rack and Pinion used for first stage of elevator)
  • 228-7884 Winch and Rope Pack (Rope used to ‘Cascade’ the second stage)
  • 228-3512 Specialty Beam Pack (Angled Beams used in Claw)
  • 228-2534 Chain & Sprocket Kit (power transfer from motor to Pinion for elevator)
  • 228-7456 Motor Shaft Add On Pack
  • 228-7457 Short Capped Shaft Add On Pack
  • and/or 228-3620 Plastic Shaft Base Pack
  • Restocking on various Beams and Connectors will likely be valuable as well.

Do we have any rough idea of how much longer ? Like is it likely a few days, a week or two ?

I’m the head coach of 4 new teams. (2x IQ and 2x v5) who are all new to robotics. Our IQ teams in particular are eager to get the hero bot instructions so they can build that as a starting point.

With our qualifiers in September (Australian teams) and our 2 week mid year break only 3 weeks away the season is disappearing very quickly for us.

Why are the Hero Bots taking so long to release this year?

Yeah, but that was almost 2 weeks ago. @bkahl said it would only take a few days/

I am in a similar boat. We are a rookie V5RC team just graduating from VexIQ. The team is highly excited to get started on building the hero bot. The field and game elements are all ready for 2 weeks now and we have been through teh manual.
We desperately want to start building the hero bot to get a better understanding of the game, but the lack of instructions is very much dampening the mood.
Its been more than a month since the game has been announced.
How is this friendly/ empathetic towards Rookie teams?

@bkahl I am coming at you with respect and thankfulness for what you do. My post is not meant to be disrespectful at all.

It would be highly useful for us coaches if you could provide a timeline for when the instructions for the hero bot would be available. You could say, “2 weeks from now” and thats totally okay, because we will plan for doing something else productive during that time - like possibly building a different, although irrelevant bot, just to get the hang of tools and parts.

Not knowing the timeline here is actually affecting our summer schedule. This is the time when the students have maximum time to put time on building and we are just spending that time waiting. Please understand this perspective and let us know a date when we can expect the instructions. Thank you.

Respectful would be to acknowledge deeply the commitment that the VEX/RECF teams put into releasing a new Game in a way that no spoilers are revealed ahead of Game announcement. While we may think VEX RECF only purpose is the Game - their missions and teams have a wide spectrum of activities - some anticipated, and some not. I can image for VEX/IFI they have a myriad of projects that are going (like my super secret aquatic robotics program so we can have a water game!) and geo-political realities (hmm ports too full or too empty, or, Canals open or closed…)

In our real world, there are a lot of uncertainties that are outside our control. For HeroBots, their is an acknowledgement that the design needed to be refined and properly documented (deep breadth, while the company resources are tending to other projects) and will be done ASAP with number of days between V5 and IQ release … (yes I read all the posts!)…

For all who worry about VEX/IFI/RECF ability to deliver good solutions - let’s turn back the clock to March 2020 when everything shutdown. The pivot VEX/RECF did during Covid was amazing to keep teams engaged in robotics - Virtual Worlds was the start, then live remote competitions, VEX VR (huge!!!)…

HeroBots are relatively new to VRC - before HeroBots the assumption is the game could be played by a Clawbot… guess what, a clawbot can play Push Back.

Well in my opinion a claw bot can’t play push back well…

Ok, have your opinion  Fact - Clawbot capabilities from my 7th grade class:

  • Can grasp blocks from match loader tube
  • Can grasp blocks from floor
  • Can place blocks in center lower and upper goals
  • Can place blocks in long goals
  • Can park

There you go - can achieve game play tasks with a reference design that can stay within game criteria for horizontal and vertical expansion, as well as, meet start criteria using all robot rules using only parts from competition starter kit.

Put an experienced driver behind the controller - win

Opinions are just that. Facts of my post are accurate - a clawbot can achieve the scoring objectives of the game. No need to overthink - just improve designs so you can score more.

I see what you’re saying, but why would an experienced driver be driving s clawbot? If they’re experienced wouldn’t it make more sense for them to drive a more complex robot? Also if you don’t mind could you share a video or gif of the clawbots doing these things I’m just curious.

You can also add to the clawbot to make it more useful for Push Back, I added a few beams to the clawbot to test one of my ideas for modifying the HeroBot, which is to have a long beam to push blocks farther into the goals or push the other team’s blocks out. It’s a pretty good starting point!

None of these people were rude or being mean to Vex, nor being disrespectful. As I teach my students, you can always respectfully ask about things. Thats how we learn. Disrespect is when you are rude by calling names and insulting others. That is not happening here.

Vex has been creating herobots going on for 9 years (which is not new at this point). People have a good reason and it’s a logical response to respectfully ask about the herobot. Granted, many people don’t read past posts which can be frustrating. However, after 8 years of quality and reliable builds, there are programs that people and organizations begin that depend on those awesome instructions. There are summer camps and classes that happen at certain times that rely on that herobot design.

Coming on here to shame others for asking about the build instructions is being disrespectful. Saying that the herobots are fairly new is gaslighting. And no matter how accurate your idea about the clawbot is,… everyone knows that the herobot does a much better job at teaching kids about robotics… which insults our intelligence.

I’m asking Vex to delete this post that I’m writing in response to lacsap, and the last 2 posts of lacsap. Lets not allow these posts to become aggressive! Allow members to ask and vice concerns without being shamed!

I think we can all take a deep breath.

Nothing here was inflammatory, disrespectful, or without tact, and it wasn’t taken that way, I promise. All I see are passionate teachers/coaches/what have you who want to provide resources to their students, and they’re a bit disappointed that we (VEX) haven’t met our stated goals.

I can confidently say that I am probably the most disappointed we haven’t been able to release yet, and I take full responsibility for that.

As for an update, I have reached out to the team working on the instructions for an update and will post more details as soon as I hear back, but based on the last status update, I expect we should be ready for release within the next few days.

UPDATE: It sounds like the current plan is to release Initial Revisions sometime tomorrow (6/13).

Sure - will have them demo the bot tomorrow’s class.

Sweet! I’ve had some ideas for how to modify the HeroBot to store more blocks, I’m excited to build it and try them out.
