Ball lockout - critical flaw in game design?

I agree, that could be a rly easy fix, thanks for bringing that up

TT wallbot
(202020)

Wallbot gang gang

even if the tolerances on the goals isn’t changed, because obviously the gdc intended the tolerance to be the way it is (while I disagree with this decision, it is what it is), I don’t think the gdc would have intended 4 out of the 9 goals to become locked in this way, and a ziptie or a standoff could fix this particular problem with no modification of any components.

I don’t want to get too into the weeds with this post, but I don’t think this is a fair assertion. Something like this is not comparable to a season’s meta design. Getting towers locked into a state like this is not what this game is about and provides too much room to easily abuse the game counter to how it is intended to be played.

I don’t particularly care if the field setup is left like this or not since either team can use this strategy, but I think it is very destructive to what this game was meant to be. If the field is allowed to stay this way it adds another level of strategy to the game, but also tremendously gets rid of scoring ability and complexity.

Note: I am probably the biggest proponent of wallbots you will ever find on this forum, but this strategy does not add to the game, it takes away from it. It is different than a wallbot or just a specific season design that actually adds to the fun and to the strategy of the game.

Sort of like mutually assured destruction. Only defense against it may be to play it yourself.

well if it isn’t changed the way the game will go is that both sides will lock up their corner goals in auton, then fill up the goals with their color and leave them. This is not a beneficial thing for the game, it means that only 5 of the goals would actually be in use during the match, and many of the balls will be out of play as well, tied up in the corner goals. additionally, if blue owns their two corners and red owns their two corners, the game looses almost all of it’s tic-tac-toe like strategy, which is one of the key features of this game. you can only get 3 rows, and the only way to get them would be to own every single available goal.
I think that if this isn’t fixed, it will destroy much of what this game is all about (back and forth, tic tac toe)

Sorry. Don’t have bot capable. Team member was messing around with last year’s bot and managed to push a ball into the corner.

I can tell you that due to the lack of exposed ball surface, there’s no area to work with. In addition… the ball is way up in there. Look at the new pics I posted above.

We have moderate trouble removing them BY HAND, using 2 hands. Have to put fingers behind them and pull them out. In short, this is not a trivial task.

yeah a robot will not be able to remove those balls without sacrificing a lot of offensive capability.

Yup. Which, the game, if played in that way, is HARDER and more varied. If the corner ‘shortcut’ stands… it’s going to be boring?

I wouldn’t say boring, just counter to the intended nature of the game. It’s like if in turning point, 4 of the flags would stay toggled permanently, no toggling them back.

This would also be an issue for eps. Volunteer field resetters would have a hard time removing the balls, costing time, especially if this practice was widespread. They could also accidentally damage the field by doing so.

actually this does sort of damage the field. The ball has to pry up the disks to fit in this way, and by doing so it can slightly scoot up that ring every time a ball is wedged there, which means the tolerances will change as the goals are flexed like that.

tbh I don’t think any game element that relies on bending is a great ideas, seems like we might see some rings snapping or deforming later on.

in fact, it could potentially be ruled illegal for being an action that could damage field elements. While it doesn’t actually damage the goal, it can’t be good for it either.

O yeah I agree this is bad, I was just reacting to them saying that it’s too powerful to not adopt as if it hasn’t happened before

Wouldn’t just descoring a ball in the corner be ruled as damaging the field elements then, as it has to bend to get the ball out?

but it had to bend a lot more if you wedge it as opposed to descoring it from the front, because it’s right next to the posts.

idk probably not illegal, but could be something for the Q&A if it doesn’t get fixed.

The rings and balls appear to be ABS plastic. That stuff is practically bulletproof. I see no indication of long term damage to either.

At this point I don’t see where the CURRENT rules disallow this tactic. So now we wait for this to be dealt with by the appropriate people.

Progressive teams will have to build 2 bots to be ready for if/when a ruling comes in concerning this.

I don’t think you need two bots, just have something that falls down behind you like an antitip from last year but is used to wedge the ball in the corner, just take it of if it becomes illegal

I should be more clear. There’s probably a bot that can descore these balls, at the serious expense of other capabilities though. Concurrent development is needed to be prepared.
