Injustice in the RECF (448X)

The DQ shouldn’t effect them going to worlds though. They qualified weeks before at Google.

Me, too… and it makes me wonder how many other poor word choices have been made, and how reluctantly the apologies have been made…

Words matter.

Jason

  1. I am 100% on RECF’s side.

  2. I have seen nothing to convince me that anything of any substance exists on either side regarding the original ruling. I would be a bad lawyer, but I don’t really value “testimony” for much if anything in most situations. It’s just “he said, she said”.

  3. If I were an adult in charge of an organization dealing with a competition from a group of independant children, I would insist on the children bringing a mostly unbiased adult to ensure no further allegations are made up. Parents will never be an appropriate choice, so, independant or not, school administration was 100% called for.

  4. About the corruption, targeting, and so forth. To what point and purpose? In the grand scheme of things, you aren’t special, and you aren’t important. Why on earth would anyone go out of their way to target you? What do they stand to gain? What is the benefit to them for their trouble?

  5. Indiana suffers from too many teams and not enough competitions. If all competitions had to be official, our state would collapse. THAT would do far more damage than one team in California getting an unfair ruling.

Clearly your understanding of what is going on is very minimal.

Are you saying as students we should not be self sufficient because I believe having to go through a 3rd party is not the way to go

Just here to respond to point 5.
This is states
This qualifies for worlds
I don’t think this was an unofficial event

Just because 448 is in California doesn’t mean that their win at the Google signiture event is void. It’s not that we have too many teams.

Very true. A fact that most of the people against 448x are overlooking.

+1000.

Also, as someone who is just a parent and a spectator in most of these tournaments. I don’t know any of the kids involved here but I have seen first hand situations where 448X were involved and can be interpreted as disrespectful. I remember at a local tournament this season where 448X was competing. During one of the elimination matches, they were called for trapping and causing another team to tip over. They argued the call but the head referee’s decision was final and they lost the match. in the succeeding matches, I remember the kids from 448X heckling the referee in what to me seem like a very disrespecting way. The referee had to turn to them and glared at them before they stopped. To me as an outsider, it was very telling and I remember thinking that they may have blown their chances for any judged awards because of their conduct.

Again, I only offer this story not to throw shade at 448X but to show that anyone could have said something in the heat of the moment which could have been interpreted as a lot more offensive that you think it would be. The heckling that happened may have been just them being kids but to the referee (unpaid volunteer), that is very disrespectful. Just like the word “Corruption” being used in the original title. I find that to be very offensive and it attacks the integrity of the parties involved.

Absolutely teams should be independant, and within the scope of a competition completely self sufficient. I support students handling their own fundraising and just about everything else.

However, it is not ever going to be acceptable for a group of children in a closed room to have an argument with the head of a company without an appropriate adult in the room with the students.

After hearing out both sides, I too have to agree with the RECF

States is as unofficially hosted and staffed as anything else. Worlds takes volunteers for many positions. For me “unofficial” means volunteers not paid and trained by RECF.

That context and understanding seems to be lost a lot in this thread.

I am going to try to respond to as many of the comments and questions made as a response to my post as I can. I am trying to be transparent as possible. I know not all my answers will please everyone or even anyone but that does not mean I’m hiding something. I recognize that there are areas the REC Foundation can improve and this is why I am here. It is not possible for me to address every comment and continue to respond to every post on this (or any) thread. I have an event I need to attend tomorrow so I will have limited time before I need to leave (it is 6:00 PM at the REC Foundation office in Texas).

Why is it that you have not given the kids on 448x the evidence for the accusations against them that they have asked for several times?

I have to ask the same thing. I’m definitely on @DanMantz’s side, but it’s the main thing hurting his case.

WILL we ever see true evidence to the case

Probably not. But we all knew that already

Considering the number of times that it has been asked for and not received, i don’t think so.

As Dan said, there are other things that caused this whole situation that can be worked on. This isn’t exclusively limited to 448, but this has happened before. While I support 448, if it is beating a dead horse, what can we do to avoid this whole thing again?
