Maybe since USA is still not in the peak or midst of this virus, or maybe you don’t have all the info available to those countries that went through the peak.
Based on stats, yes, it is true that it is much deadlier against the vulnerable group, while most of us will have suffer very mild symptoms.
But the danger about this virus is that it is very very infectious, and it has been established that it can be contagious even during incubation period (ie. don’t need to have symptoms to spread).
And the most important consideration is those in the vulnerable group that we will come into contact with - we don’t want to pass the virus to them unknowingly.
Like it or not, we lived in a community, we have family and relatives and friends that we need to consider as well. The virus might not harm us, but do spare a thought for your loved ones (esp if they are in the vulnerable group).
TL:DR - we don’t want to live in fear, but not in reckless abandon as well.
Be interesting to see how many Yes and No are from US and from outside of US, it seems to be a tale of two cities. We just had people in Aus return from US, from three different areas and all had the virus. Will be interesting to see how it all unfolds, but opinion seems to vary regarding worlds with teams in the US to teams outside the US.
This. I personally am not particularly concerned about getting infected for myself, or even for my school-age children; we may well get sick, but I’d anticipate we’ll probably recover without much issue (based on what I’ve heard so far). However, we are in close and unable-to-stop contact with various people in the vulnerable groups, and THEY are the reason that I am concerned. My family will make a much greater effort to avoid getting sick in order to protect them as best we can, because if THEY get sick they are unlikely to recover easily.
I do think that the media tends to overreact in its tone and blatant (at times) disregard for facts, but I also think that the need to be cautious and aware, and to take this seriously and consider the potential effects, mean that the World itself is not overreacting.

And just to clarify this point -
It is not a China virus. It is corona virus.
In fact, this is the type of thinking that has been leading to many hate crime against Asians (in Europe and USA). Maybe an additional reason why international teams should stay away from worlds?
And I don’t see exaggeration as a virtue. But again, maybe this is just cultural difference.
My advice during these difficult times is to put our energy to:
keeping safe
engaging in creative activities that can be held online - similar to online challenges while geographic regions deal with this horrible virus - for example: “design 2024 Game!”, “design a board game for each VRC game…”
China is not at fault for the spread of this virus. As soon as they realized the severity of the situation they imposed the strongest possible containment measures. They did better than the us would have done if the virus originated here. Do not blame anyone for this, its just an unfortunate incident that we all are going to have to deal with.
From what I’ve seen, as soon as cases start being reported in a state, the public schools place a ban on school-sponsored out of state trips. Although our team personally hasn’t been affected yet, the first 2 cases were reported in Michigan last night and today local school districts sent out emails detailing what they were going to do, including banning travel.
We just have to wait out this virus and be thankful that some of us arent affected that much. Stay healthy and remember that good things will come soon
